Bay Plaza Eye Doctor

10461 LASIK Surgeon

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) eye surgery is a specific type of refractive surgery, performed by our Bay Plaza eye doctor, Dr. Gary R. Fishman, which corrects farsightedness (hyperopia), nearsightedness (myopia), and astigmatism. PRK was the very first type of laser eye surgery for vision correction and is the forerunner to the popular LASIK procedure. Although recovery from PRK eye surgery takes a bit longer than recovery from LASIK eye surgery, PRK is still commonly performed at Vision Center of New York, and for some patients, offers advantages over the LASIK procedure.

Much like LASIK and other types of laser eye surgery, PRK works by reshaping your cornea using an excimer laser, which allows light entering your eye to be properly focused onto your retina for clear vision. The one major difference between PRK and LASIK is that with the LASIK procedure, a hinged, thin, flap is made on your cornea in order to gain access to the treatment area. With PRK eye surgery, our Bay Plaza eye doctor removes the cornea’s entire outer layer to expose the area and no flap is created. With both PRK and LASIK, the excimer laser then sculpts the stromal layer of your cornea which corrects your refractive error.

The final results of PRK eye surgery are comparable to LASIK results, but recovery from PRK is initially slower because it takes a few days for new epithelial cells to regenerate and cover the surface of your eye. Our Bay Plaza eye doctor also makes each PRK eye surgery patient aware that there is also a slight risk of eye infection, and some hazy vision during the first few days after surgery, but it is a minor chance and vision normally stabilizes rather quickly, with the final outcome taking several weeks. The main benefit to PRK eye surgery is that the corneal flap does not need to be created and the entire thickness of the underlying area is available for treatment. This is especially a benefit if your cornea is too thin for LASIK or if you have previously undergone the LASIK procedure and been left with a thinner cornea. Dr. Fishman is an expert in his field and will put your mind at ease regarding you PRK eye surgery.
